better late than never 3: Wanaka NZ

After recovering from jet lag for a few days in Auckland, Nancy and I with Mark and Elisha flew down the the South Island of New Zealand, where we’d spend most of our time. The small town of Wanaka was our home base, located on Lake Wanaka in the foothills of the “Southern Alps”.

This little tree, growing out in the lake, is apparently a great tourist attraction. I know that _we_ took a lot of pictures of it! And ducks seemed to like it too :-)

Wanaka also had some man-made attractions as well, such as this giant hand, and a roadside historical marker (which I now forget what it was commemorating).

May in the South Island is a lot like October/November in the US, so we were there in the gap between the summer sports season and the winter sports season. Which was really great, because there weren’t big crowds and we had some nice cool weather. I’m told that it’s often rainy at this time of year, but we had fantastic sunny days almost all the time.
