better late than never 2: Auckland NZ

Continuing with our trip to New Zealand, Nancy and I with our friends Elisha and Mark spent two days in Auckland, the country’s largest city, located on the North Island.

We stayed at a really wonderful old Victorian B&B, called the Braemar House. Our delightful host, John, gave us great advice on what to see and where to eat around town.

We spent two days recovering from our jet lag by walking around town, taking a harbor cruise on a historic sailing ship, and checking out the Auckland War Memorial Museum (which was way more than just a war memorial museum :-)

Not surprisingly, I found a lot to like (and look at very close up!) in the room with historic maps.

A couple of other noteworthy items: an antique hand-crafted violin, and the flag of New Zealand done in the style of the navigation maps of the Polynesians who originally discovered and settled the islands.

In this close-up, notice how the artist created it using “found objects” — old folding rulers, bike reflectors, and (I think) buttons or bottlecaps.
