history pub: Portland farmers markets

Nancy and I are regulars at the monthly “history pub” events here in Portland. This month’s topic was the history of public and farmers markets in Portland.

Turns out that farmers markets started very early in Portland, and were a very important focal point in the city. Here’s a picture of Portland’s first farmers market building in 1872. Not too shabby!

Here’s a photo from inside the active market in the 1920’s. Pretty nice hair on the clerks; I might have guessed this was from the 1950’s :-). It’s really cool to know that Portland appreciated right from the start the great quality and variety of local produce here in the Willamette and Columbia River valleys.
