poem: unlike things

simile: a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced by like or as.
metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them.
— Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary

life is like a simile
i compare yours to mine
pretending they should be the same
why aren’t you more like me?

life is a metaphor
if i see the world through your eyes
if i walk a mile in your shoes
who will meet me when i arrive?

life is a deep snow-covered hillside pasture
at twilight as the first stars appear,
where dozens of laughing dogs leap and run in circles
with sparklers

April is National Poetry Month, and on the ReadWritePoem blog  a bunch of poets more dedicated than me :-) have taken on the challenge of writing a poem-a-day for the whole month — check it out!

Wonderful the way you play with the meaning of simile and metaphor while creating some lovely ones. The image of the laughing dogs with sparklers is awesome.

Awesome. Plays with words is your middle name?

Very good reading, thanks for writing it! I am a bit behind, due to Easter guests…I reworked a couple of poems – that made me feel better!

I like this bit: “if i walk a mile in your shoes
who will meet me when i arrive?”
And that last stanza is great, such a delightful image. We have a “dog park” near our house, and it always makes me smile to see the dogs and kids running around, happily chasing each other.

I love the way you use ‘simile’ and ‘metaphor’ and then top it with the wonderful last stanza.

Definitely deserves to be read out loud. I keep revisiting this poem, and my walls all have it memorized.

I loved the similes and metaphors… made me smile… why can’t you be more like me!!! I laughed as the dogs danced with sparklers. Read it in Wordgrove and came here to read some more. Keep up the artistry.
