old man winter
Old Man Winter hit us especially hard recently, with the worst series of snowstorms in 40 years over almost two full weeks. We ended up with 16 inches or more of snow on the ground, with a couple layers of ice thrown in just to add more fun. That may be business as usual for our midwest family and friends, but Portland just isn’t prepared for such sustained snowfalls and pretty much just has to shut down until it melts.
Fortunately (or not, depending on your perspective :-) Nancy and I mostly work from home, so we actually weren’t that affected ourselves. The puppies love the snow and we’d built up a good stock of firewood and groceries so we were in good shape. We did have one bit of excitement — our furnace decided to take a vacation, and we had a couple of days of keeping warm by space heaters until the repair guys could make it across town to fix it. But all’s well that ends well.
Below: yup, that’s really a car entirely buried in snow and not from a snowplow!
Update (December 28, 2008): After 4 days of temps in the 40s, the snow has finally all melted, and we’re back to our regular Portland winter weather of continuous rain :-).
