a sunday afternoon outing

Nancy and I have lived in Portland now for three years and we had not yet made a trip to see Mount Saint Helens up close, and this weekend seemed like a good time to remedy that. So we bundled up the pups and headed north on I-5 into Washington.

A few miles after you get off I-5, heading east toward the mountain, we found a great park at Silver Lake with a boardwalk loop trail through a marsh which will be great for bird-watching on a future trip. The puppies really liked it, and the railings meant we didn’t have to worry about them going for a swim! :-)

After we finished the mile or so loop we got back in the car and continued heading east to get a closer look at Mount Saint Helens. The days are already getting short and we decided to turn around when it started getting dark. We’ll have to come back another time, maybe next summer when the days are long, and make it all the way to the visitors center at the end of the highway.

Even at this distance, the mountain is an amazing sight. You can see the huge crater on the left (north) side, and try to imagine that whole top half being blown entirely off in the explosive eruption in 1980.

postscript: Chris’ puppy Ananda is hoping for a cuddling spot on the couch. Looks like we need a bigger couch! :-)
