where i come from we call it a swamp

One of the things Nancy and I love about the Portland area is the beautiful rural countryside surrounding the city, which reminds us a lot of Iowa where we grew up. Nancy’s boss Linda is an avid birdwatcher, and she mentioned to Nancy a great wetlands for bird watching tucked up under the foothills of the Coast Range. So Sunday, we grabbed our binoculars and camera and set out to see what we could see.

The Cedar Canyon Marsh (aka Killin Wetlands) is home to herons, bitterns, woodpeckers, cinnamon teals, among many others. Ourselves, we saw a large blue heron (pictured below), fast-flying swallows, mallard ducks, red-winged blackbirds, and cinnamon teals. With binoculars we were able to see the birds really well, but without a telephoto lens the camera can’t do them justice.

The marsh is away from heavily travelled roads, so most of the time it was very quiet and we could hear clearly the amazing variety of sounds the birds made. What a great place for a nice weekend afternoon getaway – thanks for the tip, Linda!
