Universal Studios

Wednesday we drove up to LA, past downtown, and on to Hollywood and the Universal Studios theme park. The entry area of shops, restaurants, and a movie theater have a sort of 50’s retro theme. This billboard is too cool: “Relaxing Orange with his friend Fridge”. :-)

The main attraction is the actual studio back lot, which is still in use for both movies and TV shows. From a distance and at first glance, it may look like a real town, but look closer and you can see that they are all just facades. A couple of highlights: the official looking building with the columns was the town hall in the “Back to the Future” movies, and the actual Bates Motel from “Psycho”.

The tour bus also goes past a display of famous movie cars. My favorite: the Deathmobile from Animal House.

Back from the back lot tour to the theme park proper, we watched several shows on movie special effects, including one on how the fire effects were done for the movie Backdraft.

We ended up cutting our day at the park short so we could catch the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie (inspired by riding the Disneyland ride so many times the previous day :-).
