San Diego Wild Animal Park

Nancy and I arrived in southern California one day before our friends Chris and Jen, for our weeklong whirlwind marathon tour of SoCal theme parks: San Diego Wild Animal Park, Universal Studios, Disneyland, and Disney’s California Adventure. (Nancy and Jen went by themselves last year, but this time they were nice enough to bring us guys with them.) Nancy and I took our extra day (Sunday) for a leisurely walk along the beach.

Chris and Jen arrived Sunday evening, so Monday morning the marathon began with a day at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park.

Instead of cages or other small areas for the animals as with regular zoos, here there are huge open areas where the animals can wander as they would in the wild (herbivores and carnivores separated :-), so binoculars are very useful. Monkeys and tropical birds have to be enclosed, of course, and there is also a display of poisonous toads and other jungle creepy-crawlies.
