winter haiku

These haiku were my contribution to a winter-themed writing contest.

aloof in summer,
on chill winter evenings she
is quite the lap cat

Willow is our 11 year old tabby.

japanese maple,
after the first winter storm
still a few leaves left

We have a very small, young Japanese maple tree in our front garden. After the recent rains and winds, all of the large trees in our neighborhood are bare having lost the last of their brilliant fall foliage. But our little maple, sheltered in the corner of our front porch, still has a dozen tiny, bright red and yellow leaves.

faintly blue ice-fog,
making an impressionist
painting of the world

a quiet blue pond
deep water like long friendship
ice-free in winter
