two new haiku

My contributions to the latest haiku party I attended, contrasting summer and winter.

italian summer,
sheep graze on a far hillside –
so hard to stay aw…

winter seashore, night –
the moonlit waves flecked with foam,
offshore a whale spouts

In mid-winter, the California gray whales make their southerly migration from the summer arctic feeding grounds to the warm waters off Mexico for calving. At the peak of migration, as many as 30 whales per hour will pass within a few hundred yards of the rugged Oregon coast, day or night; a magnificent sight.
