marine world

As part of an anniversary celebration for Chris’ company, they gave free passes to Marine World for their employees and their friends and family. Chris and Jen invited Mark, Deb, and Gabe, plus Nancy and I to join them for a free day at Marine World.

The star attraction at Marine World is Shouka the killer whale. I forget the details, but she’s something like 20 feet long and two tons, so watching her leap completely clear of the water is amazing. No wonder the first seating section is called the Splash Zone! :-)

Nancy and Jen are roller coaster fanatics.

Chris stayed well clear, but I was foolish enough to let them talk me into riding with them on the old-style all-wooden roller coaster. It’s not that they’re scary, but I just don’t enjoy having my brain shaken around like a baby rattle.

We did eventually find a ride that was more my speed :-)

The company also paid for a full buffet lunch and bar in one of the picnic areas, with a special appearance by Sylvester the Cat.

It was a pretty warm day, so a go on the water ride was definitely in order. Not only do you get soaked from boat hitting the water, but spectators can control giant spray hoses to really make sure that everyone gets drenched from top to bottom (thanks Chris!)

Once was enough for me, but Nancy, Jen, and Deb made a second trip. In the closeup picture, that’s Jen with her hands way up in the air, with Nancy to the left and Deb to the right.

Marine World is also partly a zoo. We stopped by the flamingo area.

Pink flamingos on a pink island – this other nearby bird seems to think it’s all a bit too gaudy :-)

Another great animal exhibit is the Butterfly House. Gabe liked the goldfish pond.

As the sun set, it was time to start heading for home.
