smoothie party

Last year, our friend Anne got a new blender and decided to christen it by holding a “smoothie party”. She invited everyone over and asked each of us to bring our favorite fruits, and she provided her favorites as well as yogurt and crushed ice. Mix fruit, yogurt and ice, blend well and voila! It was great fun.

Well, the last couple of weeks have been unseasonably hot in the bay area, and a cold smoothie is a great way to help stay cool, so I decided to throw a smoothie party of my own! Deb volunteered to bring over her famous stuffed trout, and so we added grilled trout and vegetables to the menu. Also, Nancy and I have been spending a lot of time together in private during her visit (surprise! :-), and this seemed like a good way for the whole group to have a fun day together with her.

In addition, I invited over a coworker, Gunnar, and his family. Gunnar is from Germany, on temporary assignment in my department for six months. Being away from home so long, he brought his family with him: his wife, Sabine, and his children, Janek and Melanie. It also gave Don an excuse to practice his German! :-)

We had every kind of fruit, it seems: strawberries, bananas, oranges, blueberries, raspberries, pineapple, and apple juice. One of my favorite parts is the way different combinations make wonderfully different colored drinks — anything with blueberries and raspberries in it had a deep, dark, indigo color, while pineapple, orange and banana made a bright, yellow-orange drink. For lunch, besides the trout we had grilled corn-on-the-cob and other grilled vegetables. Yum!

Here (clockwise from the left) are Janek, Sabine, Melanie, Gunnar, myself and Nancy, enjoying ourselves on the new deck furniture that Nancy and I picked out (and Don helped carry!) last week.

I’m only sorry I didn’t get pictures of the wonderful spread of fruit we started with on the dining room table — it was magnificent! I’m glad that Don thought to grab the camera and take this picture (thanks Don!)
